When the computer begins to have a hitch of either speed or a malfunction, most of your activities are stalled.

If your computer is slowing down its functions and the speeds have become significantly low, do not worry because there is a solution to fix this problem.

Most people do not have prior information on ways to speed up their computer, and once they face a problem of speed, they blame the computer regarding age or processing power and end up disposing of the computer.

It is true that those causes could genuinely slow down the computer, but before you get rid of your old computer, it is important to try other means to speed it up because the problem of age might not be the immediate reason for the slow speeds.

A new computer may also face this problem, and it is vital that it is fixed before it becomes a menace.

Therefore, any computer whether new or old has the probability to slow on speed. Before we delve on the ways to fix the problem of speed, it is essential you learn the reasons behind your slowing computer to learn, how to fix the problem without the help of a technician.

Reasons why your Computer is Slow

You may have many unnecessary startup programs

Newly downloaded programs mostly try to make their way to the startup menu (in Windows) or Login items (in Mac).

Therefore, if you do not disallow them from doing so, they will continuously try to make unnecessary processes all together tasking your computer to carry out multiple operations slowing down your computer.

The problem may be because you may have many startup programs and all of them are running at the same time which tired up the computer.

Your hard drive is failing

Majority of the people do not know this, but it is a real problem with computers. There are also some technicians who take advantage of your ignorance, and when you take your laptop to them, they tell you a lot of misleading information to rip you off.

A hard drive has a lifespan, and once the lifespan nears, there is no way to reverse the effect.

When your hard drive wears down the speed of your computer starts to slow, and at times you have a problem booting your computer.

In case you notice a slow booting speed, and your computer hard drive does not have a lot of used space, there is a probability it is wearing down.

Your hard drive is almost full

The hard drive space is the most common reasons for a slow computer. In most cases, when you find that your computer is slowing down, check the disk space and see if it is above 90% full.

As many people store most of their files like photos, videos, software and other data in the computer, it gets full very fast compromising the space needed for the computer to process information. Some computers can slow down as low as 50% full.

Many add-ons on your Browser

Browser extensions enhance your experience when using a computer. However, when you add many extensions to your computer, the effort to ease your browser experience can become a problem in disguise. The add-ons slow your computer speed by eating-up your processing power.

Running many programs at once

Just like startup programs slow the computer when they run together; opening many existing programs also slows down your computer.

The moment you open several applications, the processing power starts getting weaker because these programs have to share the processing power and the disk space to run their functions. This may be one of most common reason for slow computer speeds.

Rogue Programs may hog your processing power

It is not only heavy-duty videos and music apps that eat up your processing power, but there are also programs that have a loop and continuously encounter an error.

Opening many browsers at the same time

This could be a reason of opening many different browsers at the same time say, chrome, Mozilla, and torch at the same time or even opening many tabs of the same browser at the same time. The browsers end up eating up the processing power of the computer.

An overzealous antivirus program

An antivirus is probably one of the most critical software in your computer as it ensures computer hygiene and it acts as the computer protector. However, there are anti-viruses that run regular unnecessary scans every time jeopardizing the processing power of the computer.

Having a virus

If you are not operating on an antivirus, your computer is at its most significant risk. There are many viruses on the web, and with no antivirus, it goes without saying that your computer will be affected. Viruses mess everything in your computer by hijacking the browser to pushing adverts, pushing sites, or crashing your computer.

Your room is too dusty

Sometimes the problem is not related to the hardware or software but the overall environment. If your computer is dirty, it can block the ventilation that encourages ventilation which cools the computer. When the computer starts heating–up, it increases the chances for malfunction and crashed which is dangerous for the computer.

Inadequate processing memory

This aspect is what comes to the mind of many people when they think about computer speeds. If you have fixed all the other problems and your computer still runs slow, the problem may be associated with the low RAM space.

There are arrays of other reasons that may cause slow speeds on your computer, and you should be able to identify them before you try to fix your computer. In Mac: Go to applications/utilities/disk utilities, then highlight the hard drive and click first aid option at the top of your screen.

If your hard disk is worn out, there is no otherwise other than to replace it. Before you replace the hard drive, make sure to back-up all the files on your computer.

Ways of protecting your hard drive and increasing its lifespan are to avoid throwing, dropping or causing an impact on the computer as the hard drive is affected. You might also upgrade to an SSD which is more expensive but has away longer lifespan by over six years.

If your hard disk is full

This task is not difficult; the only hard part is to decide what information to discard. In this instance, you need to delete all the files that are not necessarily required and retaining at all cost the vital data. If all your information is important to you, you might need an external hard drive.

For convenience to preserve all the records at one place, you need to upgrade to a more massive storage hard drive to avoid the inconvenience of moving with a hard drive everywhere you go.

Removing extensions, you do not require

You will find that in most instances, there are extensions you do not use or those that you use after a very long while.

If it is a case where you have slow speeds caused by numerous extensions, identify the extensions that are of no importance to you and disable or remove them because they will slow your computer even when they are not under use.

Every browser has its way of removing the extensions from Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Internet Explorer, and Edge. To fix that problem, you need to click on the help pages of your browser and see how to remove the extensions.

Running the Necessary programs

Some programs that you run are of no use at the time you are using. You will notice that when you have opened many applications at once, the computer starts hanging and at times the program stops to respond.

Opening only one browser

You will notice that almost all browsers work in the same manner meaning what you do with one browser you can do the same with the other.

You need to designate a preferred browser that you will use for most of your browsing needs so that when you want to browse, you only open one browser.

Some sites work well with some browsers and if it comes to such a case where you have to open more than one browser, make sure it is indispensable and unavoidable.

Get rid of Rogue programs

If you have a rogue program in your computer, check how much processing power they are taking up. If they are still not using much power, you can select quit the process, and they will not be in any use. Alternatively, you could remove them because they would cause problems tied to hogging the operating system later.

Antivirus program

Antiviruses such as Kaspersky, BitDefender, Norton, and others that do not run unnecessary scans are recommended. Look for an antivirus that only runs a scan when instructed to or when it detects malware.

This idea is also coined to the problem of having a virus slowing your computer. Installing an antivirus program is essential.
